POPs in upholstered furniture

POPs means Persistent Organic Pollutants—harmful chemicals that remain in the environment for a long time. Some were used as flame retardants in furniture.

In waste collection, items that may contain POPs include sofas, sofa beds, armchairs, upholstered dining chairs and footstools, particularly their foam and fabric.

In England, seating waste containing POPs must:

  • Be kept separate from other waste.
  • Go to an authorised facility for incineration to destroy the POPs.
  • Not be sent to landfill or ordinary recycling.

This separate handling and treatment can mean additional disposal costs.
